Steve is a graphic designer by profession having worked for a printing company and two advertising agencies in the Greenville area before launching his own business, Agency Services, in 1979. While pursuing a career in graphic design and marketing, Steve and his wife, Janie, began a separate retail business in the mid-80s called The Map Shop.
It was located on Coffee Street in downtown Greenville for over 20 years. In their heyday, The Map Shop was featured in Southern LIving twice. Then, around 1990, they opened a second brick & mortar shop in Charlotte, NC. New owners eventually transitioned that store to an online map resource that today provides a host of maps and map related products

For over 36 years, Steve has produced hundreds of custom "city locator" maps for visitor's bureaus, chambers of commerce, real estate property developments, and numerous special event maps.
In 2022, Steve and Janie worked with Tim Todd of Discover Upcountry on a total map upgrade of the Cherokee Foothills National Scenic Byway KIOSK. It’s located on Highway 11 out front of the Hyder’s Peach Country shed in Gowensville, SC.
The Table Rock Visitors Center in Pickens County houses two of the largest custom map displays Steve has produced in the Upstate. Also, in conjunction with the Metropolitan Arts Council (MAC) and the participating artists, Steve has designed and produced the Open Studios maps featured in every catalogue since 2002.
The large wall map at the rear entrance of The Mast Store in downtown Greenville was produced by The Map Shop with fine cartography work by Paul Galbreath.
